Hayman’s maiden ‘Ton’ sets up juniors’ success over old timers
Pembrokeshire U16’s (200 for 2) beat Pembrokeshire & District Over 40’s Club (199 for 8)
Venue: Whitland Cricket Club
Umpires: Messrs Trefor Evans & Huw Davies

A superb undefeated century by Toby Hayman helped a Pembrokeshire under 16 team comfortably beat their counterparts at over 40 level in an entertaining tussle at Whitland.
It was Hayman’s first century and he showed what a mature batsman he has become after a string of classy innings for Burton in local league cricket. He opened the batting, never looked like getting out and stroked 20 fours and three sixes en route to his 128 not out that showed his capabilities to the full.
Over 40s recover from a poor start
The 40 Club batted first on a fast outfield as Greg Thompson and Jack Parkinson opened the bowling for the U16’s and bowled tight lines against Jonathan Twigg & Dewi Davies. Thompson finished with 1-17 off his five overs with the dismissal of Davies (1) aided by a sharp slip catch by Kurtis Marsh. Parkinson finished with 0-5 and a run out by Thompson saw the 40 club lurch to 14 for 2 in the seventh over.
It was now the turn of the Haverfordwest duo, Jonathan Twigg and Richard Scriven, to take the attack to the U16 change bowlers of James Davies and Kurtis Marsh as the score moved on to 86 runs after 20 overs.
Big Scriv leads counter-attack
The introduction of Scott Jones saw Twigg fall for 39 before Tom Harries of Llandyssul, aided by Scriven, moved the score on to 132 in the 28
th over. A sharp run out by Jones saw Harries go for 28 and Scriven was caught on the boundary by Thompson, bowled Jones for 62, including one big six and eleven fours.
Chris Fitzpatrick was stumped next ball by Bevan off Jones’ bowling and Geraint Rees also bowled well alongside Toby Hayman and Adam Parr, each picking a wicket towards the end. Peter Doyle (13 not out) and skipper, Phil Sutton, who eventually put himself in, showed his class with a quick fire 20 as the 40 Club ended on 199 – 8, in their 40 overs.
Hayman starts well as Lewis and Bevan support
Toby Hayman and Tomos Lewis opened the batting for the U16’s against the bowling of Chris Fitzpatrick and John Lodge for the 40 Club.
Hayman has been in scintillating form this year and he defended his wicket well, at the same time despatching anything loose to the boundary with aplomb. Lewis stroked some nice shots through extra cover, before he fell to a fine catch by Sutton off Lodge for 10.
His loss brought Dafydd Bevan to the crease and he slowly built his innings whilst at the other end, there was no stopping Hayman, who raced to 50 in the 13
th over, despite tight bowling by Fitzpatrick. The spinners Nick Evans and Peter Doyle could not contain the flow of runs as the 40 Club tried various options of bowling with only Sutton being able to slow the run rate down.
Hayman heads U16s home
Fitzpatrick returned to the attack and had Bevan caught for 35 by Scriven in the 30
th over, with the score on 146. Hayman was joined by Jacob Knox, who ended up on 18 not out as Hayman reached his maiden century and was still there at the end as the U16’s passed the total in the 37
th over.
At the end of the day, cricket was the winner, as there was some fine batting by individuals on the day on an excellent Whitland wicket, with the game well umpired by Trefor Evans and Huw Davies. A gorgeous tea was provided by Janice & Mathew Webb, with the whole day organised by Paul Webb.
