SB Williams Inter Counties Cup:

Pembrokeshire 6 - Neath 1

Steffan Williams and Nicky Woodrow grabbed a hat-trick each to secure an eye-catching six-goal victory for Pembrokeshire against Neath at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium.

Back in January Pembrokeshire beat Carmarthenshire 7-1 and the West Wales Football Association awarded the county outfit a 1-0 victory against Swansea, who didn’t fulfil their fixture at the Bridge Meadow back in December last year.

So this comfortable win against Neath was Pembrokeshire’s third win on the trot, which secured the SB Williams Inter Counties trophy plus medals that will be presented in due course by the West Wales Football Association.

The hosts got off to a dream start when they scored after only 28 seconds, when a superb diagonal ball out of defence by Nathan Banner set up a first-time cross by Johnny Horgan which allowed Nicky Woodrow to bullet home a header from six yards, with James Harris helpless in the Neath goal.

Quick goal

In the 19th minute the hosts went two goals ahead, after some good possession ended with Woodrow’s co-striker Steffan Williams finishing from six yards for a goal on his debut, after an awful mis-kick by Harris.

Pembrokeshire skipper Peter Blain made a splendid save to deny Neath and his team added a third goal after a cross in from the left by Steve Allen gave Woodrow the chance to send a little dinked ball back across goal and Steffan Williams headed home his second.

Whenever Neath tried to counter they found Banner, Matthew Broome and Simon Gilderdale strong at the back, with James Stanmore and Ben Steele also exerting an influence in midfield, and the county added goal No 4 when  Steele found Steffan Williams on the left, who crossed for Woodrow to bury his shot from 18 yards.

County goalkeeper Peter Blain pulled off a stunning save at full stretch to deny Neath’s Nicky Rothero’s shot from distance and Pembrokeshire went into half time deservedly four goals to the good.

County changes

In the second half Luke Hayward came on for his County debut, replacing James Stanmore in midfield, whilst Scott Jones replaced Steven Allen at right back; the Neyland youngster also making his debut in senior County colours. Late in the game Chris Ormond replaced the impressive Gilderdale at centre back.

With the game in the bag, the second half was a far closer affair and Neath did manage to get on the scoresheet when substitute James Newell struck from close range.

Late in the game, Steffan Williams deservedly completed his hat-trick, with a close range header, then right at the death Woodrow showed excellent composure to score, following unselfish work by Ashley Bevan on a quick counter attack.
