Football Tribute:

This week saw the passing of one of a great quartet of characters who did so much work at Monkton Lane for over half a century and we at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk are pleased to publish the nice tribute provided by his family and Monkton Swifts Football Club.

His brother Leslie Cole and Les Thomas were part of that group, as was Charlie Blunsden, now the only surviving member and another it has always been a real pleasure to see at the ground.

“It is with the deepest of regret that we announce the passing of Clifford Cole, the much-loved former Chairman of Monkton Swifts Football Club.

Since first becoming involved in the club, he was involved in some of the greatest moments in Monkton’s history, like league championship wins and Senior Cup Final successes.

Under Clifford’s passionate leadership and guidance, Monkton Swifts FC enjoyed tremendous success, not only on the football side of things but also in the building of the structural improvements of the Clubhouse, grounds & reputation of the club.

Clifford was respected by all. You were always welcomed for a drink with him, win or lose!
Clifford’s legacy will live on.”

Danny Thomas, a former Swifts’ player and now the highly-respected President of the Pembrokeshire Referees’ Society, told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk

“Clifford was a great club man and did so much work in the background, without ever trying to take credit for it.

“When I was a player, we all held him in the highest respect and was a real unsung hero in that respect. I always enjoyed a pint and a chat with him whenever I went to the clubhouse and he had that ability to make everyone feel welcome.”

We at PembrokeshireSport.co.uk could only agree with Mr Thomas and tender our deepest sympathy to his family and condolences to everyone at Monkton Swifts.

Rest in peace Clifford.
1929 - 2024 Aged 94.
