Alec Colley Cup Round 1 matches this week

Oscar and Finley Lewis

Seasiders too strong for inexperienced Lawrenny

Lawrenny (79 for 6) lost to Saundersfoot (80 for 1) by 9 wickets

Lawrenny’s relatively young side lost to a more experienced Saundersfoot as they could only manage 79 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs before The Seasiders passed it with only one wicket down.

But perhaps the most significant feature of the game was the fact that that Lawrenny’s two opening bowlers had a combined age of only 26 as brothers Finley (14) and Oscar Lewis (12) took the new ball.

It left local pundits wondering whether there had ever been a younger opening pair and that perhaps Oscar was the youngest to take a wicket in the competition for second teams as he had Simon Stanford caught for only four runs in his excellent 1 for 20 spell.

Put in to bat first, the main Lawrenny contributors were their veterans in Steve Campbell (27) and Barry ‘Feb’ Phillips (11) against Stanford (2 for 20), Naz Kawale (2 for 14) and Jack Franklyn (2 for 20).

After Stanford’s early demise The Seasiders’ ageless Steve Cook had two boundaries in his 22 not out and then another old timer in James Caine joined him with some big hitting as he belted a six and 6 fours in his 41 not out to send Saundersfoot into the second round.

Patrick Hannon on his way to a vital haul of wicketsCup holders Carew fall at the first hurdle

Carew (92 all out) lost to Neyland (95 for 5) by 5 wickets

Umpires: Chris Stapleton and Dave Bonner
Scorers: Robert Hicks & Jenny Seaton

Colley Cup holders Carew were eased out of this year’s competition in the opening round as they could only muster 92 all out at home to Neyland, who lost five wickets but reached their target in the 17th over.

Max Brindley led the Carew batting with 29 runs, assisted by Gareth Lewis (16) and Morgan Grieve (11) as the chief wicket-takers were Patrick Hannon (4 for 17), Tom Pritchard (3-17) and George Evans (2 for 20).

Neyland’s response was led by John Tennick (23), Gregg Miller (20) and Hannon (11) as spinners Ceri Brace (2 for 29) and skipper Barry Evans (2 for 21) were joined by teenager George Waters (1 for 29) on the wicket-takers list.

Phelps powers Hook home

Llanrhian (78 all out) lost to Hook (80 for 3) by 7 wickets

Jamie Phelps called upon his wide range of experience with the bat as he scored over half of Hook’s total in their win at Llandigige Fawr against Llanrhian – and remained unbeaten as a bonus.

Batting first, no-one from Llanrhian was able to stay long enough to exert a real influence on events as only Rhys Price (14), Matthew Bennett (11) and Mike Lawrence (11) managed double figures against George James (3 for 19), old warrior Andrew Thomas (3 for 15) and another talented teenager in  Lewis Miller (2 for 22).

Miller then showed his all-round skills with 14 not out after Hook had lost three wickets to Lawrence (2 for 29) and Bennett (1 for 13), acting as an excellent foil to Phelps’ unbeaten 41.

Jamie Phelps 41 not out for Hook
