GAS 4 WALES and the finalists were John Laugharne, Owen Shanklin and Sue Christopher.
John Laugharne (Winner):
John Laugharne has been a steadfast pillar of Neyland RFC for an extraordinary 70 years. Beginning as a player at age 16, he transitioned into various committee roles, including an unparalleled 40-year tenure as Honorary Secretary and Fixture Secretary. After his playing days John became a referee and has been a dedicated member of Pembrokeshire referee’s society. He assists Neyland Cricket Club as a first-team scorer and frequently supports the youngsters at junior matches.
Owen Shanklin (Runner-Up):
Owen Shanklin has dedicated 35 years as Secretary of Pembroke & Pembroke Dock Pool League, developing it into Pembrokeshire’s largest. Over the past year, he has managed Welsh international teams at the European Championships in Malta, the Nations Cup in Bridlington, and the EBA B Team Festival in Northern Ireland. Recently appointed as Welsh Pool Association Interleague Secretary, Owen oversees results across Welsh County matches and manages international teams. His tireless dedication and organization skills have made him a linchpin in Welsh pool.
Sue Christopher (Runner-Up):
Sue Christopher has been a guiding force in Pembrokeshire’s water safety and life-saving skills for decades. She runs Broadhaven Buccaneers Surf Lifesaving Club and she founded “Wild Swim Wales” to bring the joy and confidence of swimming to all ages, supporting mental health with programs for both beginners and advanced swimmers. She is involved in training lifeguards, teaching pool swimming lessons and is a volunteer RNLI safety Officer. Sue’s passion and dedication to fostering water safety skills and a love for the sea have impacted generations.
