Venue: Lawrenny Cricket Club

Neyland won the Ormond Youth Plate Final against their counterparts from Whitland in a low-scoring tussle at Lawrenny which was tribute to the bowling and fielding in both camps rather than a lack of batting application.

This was nowhere more typified than in the Whitland innings as they chased a three-figure target but lost key run-maker Cian Evans for 17 early runs as his six-bound shot was plucked one-handed out of the air by Sammy Vaughan-Harries as he ran around the boundary to give his side a morale-booster at the start of their time in the field.

Freddie fires up the Young Borderers’ bowling

When Neyland batted first it was a similar story as their batsmen felt pressure from the accurate bowling of Rees, Joel Evans, Rhys Jones and especially Freddie Davies so that only Dylan James (17), skipper Ashley Watkins (28) and Josh James (11) managed double figures, with a wicket apiece for Rees, Evans and Jones as Freddy Davies caught the eye with his splendid 4 for 19 haul.

Rhys Davies also claimed a late wicket, as did Dafydd James, who only needed four balls to finish on 1 for 1 – and Neyland’s final tally of 99 all out was only reached thanks to the inclusion of 14 extras.

Freddie DaviesWhitland suffer two vital batting collapses

Whitland sustained the early loss of Rees after moving quietly to 21 quietly to 21 before they lost four wickets in adding four runs as Leo Power and Sammy Vaughan-Harries, on of triplets in the Neyland side, exerted an influence.

Freddie Davies added 17 alongside Joel Evans (12) but then departed – when Whitland were again in bother as they lost another four wickets in quick succession and there was no way back as Leo Power grabbed 3 for 14 and when Dylan James came on he grabbed three wickets for three runs from only ten deliveries – and Neyland were deserved winners of the Plate Competition.

Ashley Watkins received the plate award from Phil Lloyd on behalf of the sponsors, the family of the late David Lloyd, the first Hon Secretary of the Pembroke CCC, with Freddie Davies chosen by Phil Tallett, the sponsor of the man of the match award.

Martin Jones, the Junior and Youth League Organiser, presided over the presentations, thanking both clubs, officials, scorers, ground staff at Lawrenny, sponsors and everyone else involved in the undoubted success of the evening.
