Goodwick United 2 - Llangyfelach Colts 3

Goodwick United Under 14's played really well against their counterparts from Llangyfelach Colts before narrowly missing out on a West Wales cup final place for their age group.

Goodwick knew they were up against strong opposition when they were drawn against the Swansea League leaders but they got off to a good start, applying early pressure but were unable to convert a couple of half chances.

Harsh decision and bad luck

They were then on the end of a harsh decision when a controversial penalty was awarded against them by the referee. It followed from a cross by the Colts left winger that hit Ben Leahy on the foot and bounced up on to his hand. It was clearly ball to hand but the referee saw it otherwise.

The Llangyfelach forward hit the bar from the spot kick but he was quickest to the rebound and slotted the ball in for a 1-0 lead. There was not much between the two teams but Llangyfelach seemed to have the run of the ball and things went their way again when another ‘hit and hope shot’ flicked off Ben's foot into his own net.

Goodwick battle back well

Most teams would have lost heart after this but Goodwick pulled themselves back into the game when a flowing move put Sean Colella through and his powerful shot into the bottom left corner left the Colts goalie with no chance.

Goodwick were now looking the stronger team but they committed an unnecessary foul just outside the box. The Colts forward hit the ball well and the ball moved about in the swirling wind, making it made it difficult for Adam Butler in goal, and the ball spilled from his hands to a grateful Colts player who knocked it in to give them 3-1 half-time lead.

Close second half

Goodwick came out firing on all cylinders in the second half and had most of the game but were unable to get the goal they deserved until 12 minutes from the end when Adam Bowen hit the ball home from a corner.

They piled on the pressure after this and a series of four corners saw them create numerous chances but desperate defending by Llangyfelach kept the score at 3-2. One last opportunity fell to Jordan White as he slipped past the Colts keeper, but it was a tight angle, although his shot was heading for the goal, only for a Colts defender to clear the ball on the line and the Morriston team held out for a 3-2 win.

Well done lads!

Well done to Adam, Tyler, Osian, Adam, Ben, Sully, Sean, Mark, Kieron, Jordan and Callum, with a special mention to coach Darren John, for an all-round team performance which did Goodwick United and Pembrokeshire Football proud!
