Goodwick too good for West Wales' premier league side
West Wales Intermediate Cup – Round Two:
Goodwick United 4 - Clydach 0
Venue: Phoenix Park
Referee: Darren Rees (Llangyfelach)
Goodwick United showed what a strong, well-managed squad they have as they deservedly beat a Clydach side which plays in the West Wales Premier League and sit in a comfortable fourth place in the table.
They brought with them clear evidence of their ability to play good football but sadly were accompanied by a small group of young supporters who drank alcohol despite being told it wasn’t allowed, and had real supporters moving away because of their use of bad language and loutish behaviour.
Great start for Goodwick
But their hopes of a win at Phoenix Park were rocked back early on as they conceded two goals in the first 13 minutes, starting early on with Nathan Greene’s header putting Rhys Dalling through and although Clydach keeper Dean Morgan did well to block his first effort the ball rebounded to Dalling, who made no mistake second time around.
Eight minutes later Goodwick went two goals clear as Dalling was again released by Greene and when he was chopped down in the area Rhys Jones slotted the ball home, low into the left corner.
Clydach battle hard but Delaney reigns supreme
It says much for Clydach’s resolve that they had half chances through Tom Havard and Osian Davies but the Goodwick defence was strong, with keeper James Gwilt barking out his orders and skipper Scott Delaney was outstanding in the air and strong in the tackle.
He was well supported down the middle by Jordan Thomas and when Clydach attacked wide out they were blocked to Ben Adams and Steff Hayes.
There was a moment of drama after 25 minutes as midfielder Steve Dockerty was yellow-carded for an over-zealous challenge and with the visiting players and supporters demanding he be sent off Goodwick manager Chris O’Sullivan acted decisively by taking him off and bringing on Sion O’Sullivan, who played really well throughout.
Greene and Dalling a constant threat
The midfield industry of Luke Hayward, Will Haworth and Rhys Jones meant that front-runners Nathan Greene and Rhys Dalling had plenty of chances to pose a threat, with Greene so strong in the air and Dalling posing a threat with his pace and trickery as he fired over the bar and then forced a finger-tip save from Morgan.
At the other end, Clydach showed they weren’t ready to throw in the towel as Gwilt was forced to make saves from Dan Rees and Ian O’Gorman.
O’Sullivan bags unlikely third goal
But The Phoenix Park Boys added a third in unlikely fashion as Dalling won a corner on the right flank and O’Sullivan used his trusty left boot to swing in a low near-post cross which seemed to pose little threat until Clydach defender Ross Jones completely missed the ball and could only watch in dismay as it rolled into the net!
Will Haworth also went close as he rounded keeper Morgan but was pushed wide before his square ball to Dalling was well blocked by Evan Daley.
Goodwick then put the seal on an outstanding performance as sub Adam Hawkins made a run down the flank and up popped Dalling for his second goal.
Coaches Chris O’Sullivan and Nigel Delaney must have been delighted by the four-goal margin of victory as Goodwick march on, hoping for another home tie but knowing that on this sort of form they can be a match for any team in the competition.
