Vikings play well in rearranged fixture
Mixed ability rugby:
Pembrokeshire Vikings 14 - Port Talbot Panthers 17
(Game halted after 60 minutes following a nasty injury to a Panthers’ player)
Venue: The Observatory Field, Milford Haven
Referee: Kieran Burrows
On Sunday, 3
rd March 2024, the Pembrokeshire Vikings played the Port Talbot Panthers in a a quickly-arranged fixture as both teams had their original fixture cancelled due to waterlogged pictures, with The Panthers sportingly making the journey down the M4 to Milford Haven RFC.
Great rivalry has developed over the few years that we have played each other. It is always a tough game, and this game did not disappoint. It was a very close game and hard-fought, with the lead passing between the sides several times.
Unfortunately, a serious injury to a Panthers’ player called a stop to the game on 60 minutes at a very tense point in the game where Panthers were leading 17-14 but either team could have grabbed the victory. But more importantly, after spending most of the evening in the back of the ambulance, he was given the all-clear and sent home to rest.
John-Joe McDonagh was his usual live-wire around the pitch and Rhys Morris was able to celebrate as he scored his first try for the Vikings. The Couceiro brothers, Ben and Ashley, both got stuck in when they came on, with Ben scoring a try in the touch game.
Our second set of brothers Josh and Ross Price also enjoyed their time on the pitch and there were the usual committed performances from Bleddyn Gibbs, Callum Power, Rob Sweeny, Matt Heaps and Dave Roberts. The game was played in true Mixed Ability Spirit and everyone enjoyed a beer in the clubhouse afterwards.
