Pembrokeshire Vikings round off their season in style

The Pembrokeshire Vikings

Mixed-ability Rugby:

Dan Morgan on a breakThe Pembrokeshire Vikings rounded off a wonderful season by beating old rivals and friends The Port Talbot Panthers by 20-14 at The Observatory Field in Milford Haven in front of an enthusiastic crowd on Sunday afternoon.

The teams had a win apiece from their two previous matches but Simon Gardiner’s team outscored their opponents by four tries to two as fortunes ebbed and flowed – and both teams tried to play fast, open rugby.

The Vikings’ scoring started with a try from veteran forward Gethin Bateman as he pouched a weak bye-line drop out, ran straight and crashed over the line – and was also involved in The Vikings’ second score after a cracking move that also involved skipper Daniel Morgan, plus half backs Alex Frearson and Gino Cleal before Bateman unselfishly supplied the scoring pass for winger Simon Radford on his debut.

Panthers also played a part

The Panthers also featured with some good running rugby and they were rewarded with tries from Jonathan ‘Tiz’ Tyrell and Nathan Watkins, who also added a conversion alongside another by Rhys Redmond.

But The Vikings responded with a superb try by prop Kyran Owens as he received the ball near the 22 and brushed off two would-be tacklers on his surge to the line and their fourth try saw a flowing move that featured strong-running centre Callum Power before winger Josh Price sliced through to the posts.

Power also had a try disallowed as the referee decided he had lost control going over the line but in the final analysis it mattered little because The Vikings were good value for victory and rightly earned deserved praise from coaches Gardiner and Andrew Meddings..

On another day to remember as The Vikings’ touch rugby team organised by Emma Summons also beat Port Talbot Panthers and congratulations go to skipper Ben Couceiro as he led by example in scoring two tries – so well done Ben!
