Crymych Rugby Club’s talented under 18 players completed an excellent season for the club as they proved too strong for a battling Whitland team in the Griffiths Cup Final, traditionally held at the Athletic Ground Neyland.

The Neyland Club deserve every credit for hosting the final because they currently have no changing facilities but with Crymych’s talented youngsters too strong for battling Borderershelp in this area from Neyland Yacht Club the game went ahead – and Crymych produced a powerhouse display.

There was little indication of the final margin of victory for the Preseli Men as they eased into an 8-6 lead with a penalty from centre Elgan Walters and an unconverted try by flanker Guto Davies as he finished off a driving maul following a scrum near the 22 metre line. Either side of this score was a well-struck penalty by Whitland outside half Steff Howells to limit Crymych to a two-point advantage.

But the Crymych youngsters made an excellent start almost from the second-half kickoff as good interpassing allowed outside half Jake Jenkins to claim the touchdown before Walters added the extra points.

The Crymych pack had Ifan Phillips and Josh McLeod leading by example and it was hooker Phillips who finished a series of pick and drives to score an unconverted try, as did scrum half Kieran Machin as he broke down the line in his own 22 and sped 75 metres for a cracking try.Crymych’s talented youngsters too strong for battling Borderers

With the game won, Crymych added good scores from Elgan Walters, converted by Jenkins, and then second row Ryan Bean following another successful driving maul. Replacement Josh Hewins rounded things off with a try by replacement Josh Hewins which Jenkins converted to give the Crymych under 18s victory.

The trophy was presented to Crymych captain Guto Davies, by Jennifer, Gillian and Michael from the Griffiths’ family, to round off another very good season for the club, from their first team right through to their powerful junior section!
