County Ladies miss out against experienced Newport at Kilgetty
County Ladies’ Cricket
Pembrokeshire Ladies (143 all out) lost to Newport Ladies (230 for 5) by 87 runs
Venue: Kilgetty Cricket Club
Umpires: Ian Milsom & Alan Hansen
Scorer: Sam Rossiter
Pembrokeshire Ladies entertained a very experienced Newport Ladies team in their second league match of their first campaign in the competition but were unable to claim a second success as the opposition having Welsh internationals George Parfitt and Ffion Wynne playing key roles.
Current Welsh wicketkeeper Parfitt stroked 13 boundaries in his unbeaten 107 after coming in early when opener Eve Jackson was well caught by Jemma Phillips for 5 runs - and Wynne, who has played for the national team for a number of years and grabbed 2 for 11, with two of her six overs being maidens.
Also involved were sisters Eve and Tess Jackson, who are both representing Wales at the younger age-group levels whilst Charlotte Scarborough also opened well with 28 from 36 balls.
Also batting well for Newport, building useful partnerships with Parfitt were Rose Evans (20) and Shahabdeen (33, including 5 fours) as Emilia Wilson (Llechryd) topped the county bowling with 2 for 16 from her eight overs, one a maiden, as the county used nine bowlers in trying to stop the flow of runs throughout their 40 overs.
Poor start by county after tea
Pembrokeshire’s hopes of chasing down a big score needed a good start but openers Ffion Ashman (4) and Jemma Phillips (7) were both clean bowled by Wynne by the time the score had reached 12 but then Nia Williams (Haverfordwest) was joined by Wilson in a productive partnership of 63 before the latter was adjudged lbw to Shahabdeen for 13.
But Kacey Arran departed early and the biggest body blow came when No 3 Williams, who had just reached an excellent half century with nine boundaries in her hard-hitting 53 from only 55 balls, became one of Tess Jackson’s excellent 4 for 32 haul with the score on 96.
Ava Midgley (19) and Megan Arthur (15) also started well but were unable to kick on, with Midgley last out as the tail failed to wag much and the innings ended in the 34th over - but although disappointed in defeat they will have learned a great deal and as skipper Sam Rossiter (out injured so scoring instead)) told PembrokeshireSport.co.uk,
“We are a relatively inexperienced team and I can’t complain about the effort they put in today - but we need to polish our fielding a little and aim to bat the full 40 overs as the next stage in our development.”
