Classy Hakin dump Penlan out of FAW Welsh Cup

Jack Britton opened the scoring from the spot

JD Welsh Cup Qualifying Round 2

Hakin United 5 – Penlan AFC 0

Classy Hakin United had far too much firepower for West Wales Premier champions Penlan to cope with in front of a good crowd at the Observatory.

Both sides met in the cup last season and on that occasion The Vikings won 4-0, this time they bettered that score line, this time with another an impressive display.

The Vikings’ goal scorers were Jack Britton penalty, Shane Walsh, Nicky Woodrow brace and Ryan Wilson.

Hakin scored twice in space of two minutes as they caught the Swansea based outfit cold. In the eighth minute Shane Wales was fouled inside the box for a definite penalty which Britton coolly despatched.

Walsh headed home defender Camron Thomas’ well flighted free kick to put his team two-up.

At this stage Penlan had no answers to the Vikings’ superb free-flowing football which had a cutting edge.

Woodrow back with a bang

On 30 minutes they added the third with the best finish of the tie, Leon Luby’s teasing cross was met by a powerful Nicky Woodrow diving header, the striker marked his return to the starting line-up after a season away.

Six minutes later the same combination produced goal number four, Luby’s cross fell to Woodrow inside the area, the deadly striker took a touch and buried his effort in the far corner.

Scott Davies’ Vikings held a commanding four-goal cushion at the break, leaving visitors with a mountain to climb.

The second period was a far tamer affair as The Vikings kept their shape with everyone behind the ball making it tight for the visitors to rarely test keeper Sam Franklin.

Two minutes from full time The Vikings added another as Ryan Wilson beat the offside trap and ran clear to dink the ball over the advancing Marcus Collins.

“Outstanding performance,” said Hakin United manager Scott Davies. “Top quality first half, Penlan threw everything at us in the second half but some resolute defending kept us a clean sheet.”

In the first-round proper of this competition sees Hakin United travel to Afan Lido on Saturday, 17th September.
