Brilliant start to the day

The day started with the festival matches on half the pitch for under 7s and under 8s in the ‘Tag’ version of the game and the teams who reached this stage showed high skill levels already, and a commitment and enthusiasm that was a tribute to their families and coaches

They were followed by the under 9s and under 10s on slightly bigger pitches and with tackling introduced under the watchful eyes of excellent referees and coaches. One could see the raising of the passing and support play as developments from the nippers – and it is great to report that in all four matches there were no losers’ medals because they were all winners in the eyes of all in attendance – and captains received a special chocolate egg to be shared with their teams afterwards!

Terrific commitment and great skill levels

As the day progressed there was a clear elevation in terms of skills and whilst the under 11s final had my vote as the match of the day, closely followed by the under 12s, the last two finals showed real commitment and no shortage of all the skills before both were won by Crymych, whose under 16s deserve a special mention because they not only won their fifth successive final but also received their trophy for winning the league.

And finally a word for everyone involved in the day, ably led by the taciturn Ken Davies and Mike Fry; you must take immense credit and pass it on to everyone else – and long may this special day in local rugby continue!

Under 7s Tag Rugby:

The day began with the festival of tag rugby and in the under 7s of Haverfordwest and Tenby United Swifts conspired to produce a cracking start with some terrific handling in wet conditions before Tenby United Swifts scored three tries to one and both teams deservedly stepped up for their winners medals, because that is undoubtedly what they were!

Carter Heywood caught the eye for the Swifts as he ran through for two tries and they added a third score when Evan Christen crossed the whitewash but Haverfordwest played really well and deservedly grabbed a try by Rio Sheehan.

Trent Brazell caught the eye for the Young Blues with a try-saving tackle and Alfie Squelch joined Will Edwards and the rest in giving 100%. For the Swifts, Madoc Evans, Ollie Tucker and Iori Harts involved in a very strong squad, all caught the eye as the club's first of four teams appearing set the bench mark for the others to follow!

Referee: Andrew Young

Under 8s Rugby:

Neyland outscored their counterparts from Pembroke Dock Harlequins in this exciting tag rugby exhibition match, where both teams gave total commitment before the All Blacks finished up with three tries to one in a game played at a furious pace and with high skill levels to show their rugby development.

Ollie Davies, Catrin Lewis, Corey Riley and Finlay Phillips were amongst the Neyland players whilst Rhys Lewis, Arran James and Alfie Workman were busy for the Quins, whose try came from Mason Meaney.

Ben Phillips powered his way to a try brace for the Young All Blacks and Corey Arran added their other try before both teams again received their winners’ medals as part of the thinking behind festival rugby.

Under 9s Final:

Tenby United Swifts battled hard in their under 9s festival match against Haverfordwest which the Young Blues won by five tries to none but the final margin didn't do justice to the Swifts efforts against a powerful and skillful Young Blues in which Owen Rickard and Osian Williams featured in most of their charges.

Iwan Duffy, Dan Izzard, and Imogen Scourfield led the Swifts by example but the Young Blues had Raul and Raf Rees-Siso, Harry Anson, Ollie Rees and Iori Curtis heavily involved as Rickard and then Williams ploughed their way through.

Rickard added his second score after good work by their backs before Ashton O'Rearden-McPhee got on the try sheet and a late try by the dynamic Rickard gave the Young Blues a clear-cut verdict despite some yeoman work by the Swifts.

Under 10s Final:

In the under 10s section it was Tenby United Swifts who edged home by two tries to one against a gritty Narberth team which battled until the final whistle in the hope of a share of the spoils.

Swifts' skipper Iori Badham was their hero in a good all-round team performance as he claimed both his team's scores, whilst Iorrie Richards, Kyle Rossiter, Dylan Duffy and Fletcher Broadhurst were also busy in a strong all-round team effort.

Iolo Shaw, Harvey Perkins, Jack Mason and Ollie Hughes undertook the same work for the Young Otters, who had a try from Ollie Berry as their reward.

Under 11s Final:

Crymych 28 Pembroke 21

Referee: Tony Pratt

The under 11s Final between Crymych and Pembroke could easily lay claim to be the match of the day before the Crymych youngsters won by 28-21 as both teams showed terrific skills well beyond their ages.

Crymych nudged ahead with a delightful try by outside half Tomos Davies, converted by half back partner Gruff Edwards and they moved 14 points in front with a try by Iestyn Wood, converted by Owain Davies.

But Pembroke battled back superbly to level matters at 14-all thanks to tries by centre Harry Shaw and Zac Evans, both converted Charlie Shiels, before a second try from Tomos Davies, followed by another from Deian Davies, both converted by Davies, seemed to have made the game safe.

In a late Scarlets’ surge, Harry Whitehouse replied for the Scarlets to give them a sniff of success but Crymych held on for victory in a cracking game that was a showcase of all that is good in local junior rugby.

*Players of the Match: Tomos Davies (Crymych) and Eve Foot (Pembroke)

Under 12s Final:

Cardigan 12 Pembroke 29

Referee: Jason Summers

Pembroke's Jacob Wright was the man of the match for Pembroke as he scored a hat-trick of tries that helped them beat Cardigan by 29-12 in an absorbing clash.

The teams were tied at 5-all at the interval as Wright opened the scoring for Pembroke and Iwan Laugharne levelled matters for Cardigan.

Tom Cabot also scored a good try for the Scarlets after skipper Cai Ifans grabbed the Teifisiders second try - and Wright's second put his side 17-12 in front before his third was followed by a neat score from Pembroke skipper Iori Humphreys, who also added two conversions and went close to another from a neat break and clever chip ahead where he was beaten by the bounce.

Ben Mansfield, Jack Perkins and Zack Hughes were also heavily involved for the Teifisiders but Lewys Boswell, Archie Hillier-Wood and Travis Mathias helped the Scarlets win in a solid all-round performance.

*Players of the Match: Cai Ifans (Crymych) and Jacob Wright (Pembroke)

Under 13s Final:

Pembroke Dock Harlequins 12 Tenby United 34

Referee: Chris Williams

Tenby United started their match against Pembroke Dock Harlequins as hot favourites and confirmed that forecast with a 34-12 win over a gritty Quins' side in which forward Eljay Taylor led by example alongside Hannah Polkinghorn, who has played for the Quins since she was nine and must now go on to girls' rugby at under 15 level.

But the Swifts looked very sharp and ran in six excellent tries as they handled the greasy ball really well via Lewis Morgan, George Rossiter, Alex Wainwright, Josh Done, Taran Richards and Archie Hughes, with Wainwright landing two conversions.

The Quins had David Roberts joining Taylor on the scoresheet after the latter had gone very close in the corner but was held up by a superb cover tackle by a Swifts' player who showed that their defensive cover was as good as their attacking prowess.

*Men of the Match: Eljay Taylor (Pembroke Dock Harlequins) and Alex Wainwright (Tenby United)

Under 14s Final:

Cardigan 0 Milford Haven 26

Referee: Chris Oliver

Milford Haven were defeated heavily the previous season by Cardigan but gained ample revenge in a rain-soaked return where they played some superb rugby and were already 26-0 at half time.

There was no shortage of effort from the Teifisiders as Scott Grota, Dafydd Davies and Rhun Phillips caught the eye but they were never able to cope with the direct running of the Young Mariners, who started out with a try by centre Ewan Badham, who also added their third after No 8 Dylan Evans had also crossed for a score initiated by Harry Charnley, Ieuan Badham and Corey Hill.

Then centre James Williams cut through and rounded off the first-half scoring with a spectacular dive under the posts. Mariners' No 10 Kyran Gray slotted three conversions to leave Milford Haven in total command at the interval.

Cardigan tried hard in the second half to grab some scores with the elements in their favour but solid defence from the Young Mariners, With Alfie Mason, Ieuan Davies and Ieuan Badham to the fore, saw their side through comfortably in a second half where there was a lot of action but no points!

*Men of the Match: Callum Williams (Cardigan) and Ewan Badham (Milford Haven)

Under 15 Final:

Crymych 13 Haverfordwest 6

Referee: Charlie Watts

There was a real skill element, allied to total commitment, in the under 15s final between Crymych and Haverfordwest before Crymych produced a grandstand finish to turn a 6-5 deficit into a lead they might well have increased, but for some excellent late defence from the Young Blues.

There was testosterone aplenty in the first period where referee Charlie Watts issued three yellow cards but did well to make sure that players stayed on the heavy pitch and gradually settled to produce a cracking final where there was running rugby aplenty and some terrific defence by both teams.

Crymych grabbed the only try of a tight first period when flanker Joseph Mathias claimed an unconverted try after good work by Josh Bridge, Sam Edge and Iwan Twigg.

Haverfordwest responded with a penalty from centre Lee Davies and took a slight lead when Davies again slotted the ball between the uprights as reward for the efforts of Jake Merry, Travis Johnson and Tom Long.

But the final quarter belonged almost entirely to Crymych as full back Dean James, centres Hedd Nicholas and Dafydd Griffiths punched holes which Haverfordwest filled with brave tackles by the likes of Alaric Jones and Jack Evans.

But the Crymych youngsters finally recaptured the initiative after a Griffiths’ burst and they were awarded a penalty which Dean James landed - and they made certain of success when an Ilan Phillips break released Dafydd Eynon for an unconverted to make the game safe and keep up Crymych's proud record in this competition.

Under 16s Final:

Crymych 31 Pembroke Dock Harlequins 14

Referee: Jason Summers

Crymych became only the second team in the proud history of Crymych in these finals as they won their age group for the fifth year in succession, despite the yeoman efforts of Pembroke Dock Harlequins to prevent that happening.

The Quins tackled like demons and tried to run the ball at every opportunity as Gethin Bradney, Declan Scourfield, Ben Gibby and Joseph Powell were involved but found Crymych very strong in attack and defence.

Crymych certainly showed their prowess in the former skill as they raced into a 31-0 lead through cracking tries from outstanding No 8 Gethin Davies (2), flanker Jon Hill, outside half Jac Davies and flanker Guto Edwards, three of them converted by Jac Davies.

Some of the loudest cheers of the day were reserved for two late scores by the Quins as reward for their never-say-die spirit and determination to commemorate the spirit of their late coach Stuart Lewis.

First livewire prop Eljay Taylor scored after going close on a couple of occasions, and then replacement Jordan Kokolin intercepted a floated pass and sped 40 metres to the line, both scores converted by No 10 Sam James.

*Men of the Match: Gethin Davies (Crymych) and Jack Mallitte (Pembroke Dock Harlequins)
