Rugby Preview

23rd January 2009

I have to admit that I was way off beam with some of my predictions last week but take some comfort from that fact that clubs were ring-rusty and so mistakes can be forgiven then (that’s my story anyway!) Let’s see how we get on with hopefully a full programme this Saturday.

Division One (West):

Builth Wells v Whitland

Builth are currently 11th in the table, with just two wins from 11 starts, 2whilst the Borderers are still going strong at the top, having lost just twice, so they will certainly be targeting this as a game to win. Verdict: No doubt here - a win for Whitland

Narberth v Llangennech
Narberth will be boosted by their magnificent win over Pontypool in the Swalec Cup and will be looking to pouch some vital league points here against fifth-placed Llangennech, who have a won 7 lost 4 record. Verdict: Llangennech won 23-12 at home so the Otters will look to gain revenge here!

Division Three (West):

Llandeilo v Haverfordwest
Haverfordwest beat Llandeilo at home by 33-29 and will be eager for the double in Llandeilo – but the home side are ensconced firmly in third place with only three defeats in ten games. Verdict: Sadly, I have to nominate this one as a home win!

Cardigan v Penclawdd

Penclawdd are currently in tenth spot in the section with four wins and six losses whilst Cardigan are fifth, having won half of their games. Verdict: The Teifisiders lost 15-8 against the Cocklemen earlier in the season and should gain revenge here.

Division Four (West):

Milford Haven v Pembroke Dock Quins
This is an important local derby since Milford need points to stay in the top two whilst the Quins are desperate to escape from the bottom two. Verdict: The Mariners should complete the double after winning 19-10 at Bierspool but they will push Mackie’s Boys all the way!

Pembroke v Hendy
Pembroke’s topsy-turvy season continues at home to Hendy who won the previous fixture by 16-10 but are now in eighth place, just below the Scarlets. Verdict: A home win here, I’m confident of that!

Tenby United v Trimsaran

Tenby have found a rich vein of form in their most recent matches and face bottom club Trimsaran, whom they edged home against by 25-23 in the reverse fixture. Verdict: Trimsaran are still seeking their first win and I expect the Seasiders to pouch a bonus point from this match.

Division Five (West):

Bynea v St Davids
St Davids certainly proved me wrong last week and they travel to Bynea looking to overturn the 9-8 disappointment they suffered at home. Verdict: I think the Saints will march on in this game!

Fishguard v Swansea Uplands
On paper this is the easiest match of the day to predict because the Seagulls won 47-0 in the away match and are top of the table, whilst Swansea Uplands are bottom with nine defeats in as many matches. Verdict: Fishguard to pile on the points – if the Uplands have a team!

New Dock Stars v Llangwm
Llangwm have been playing much better of late so they will have a little confidence since the Stars lost in St Davids last weekend. Verdict: New Dock won by 17-13 at Pill Parks and sadly I expect them to complete the double.

Neyland v Furnace
It seems that nothing can stop the Neyland juggernaut at the moment and the All Blacks will be doubly eager for a win over Furnace because they sustained their only defeat of the season in Furnace by 29-8. Verdict: The All Blacks to won, with something in hand.

Swalec Plate:

Laugharne v Crymych
The clubs have reversed the venue and Laugharne will be eager to make progress in the competition with home advantage. Verdict: Crymych should still win this match, if they play to their undoubted potential.
