Match 1

Whitland (166 for 8) drew with Cresselly (256 for 7)

Cresselly show batting power in winning draw

Andrew Harris 76 for Cresselly

Umpires: John Williams & Tony Scourfield

Scorers: Janice Webb and Lois Howlett-Dyer

Cresselly scored a massive 256 for 7 at Whitland but were unable to winkle out the late home batsmen and so had to settle for the draw – but picked up 24 points for their efforts whilst the opposition managed just eight points since they were 90 runs adrift at the close.

Andrew Harris (11 fours in his 76|) and Phil Williams (ten fours in 55) gave Cresselly a rattling start as they put on 127 runs in good time before Williams became one of keeper Steve Fraser’s four victims. Simon Cole maintained the momentum for Cresselly with four fours and four big sixes, supported by double figures from Adam Chandler, Ryan Lewis and Julian Arthur. Home captain Mark Lee was the pick of their bowling with 4 for 50 and Paul Webb picked up three wickets but was despatched for 80 runs as Cresselly ended up with such a big score.

Whitland lost Dai Lee early but Paul Davies (31) and Edward John (26) took the score to 57 before Davies departed. Kevin Pearce raised the tempo with seven boundaries in his 42 but Simon Cole’s slow stuff earned him figures of 3 for 22 to slow things down. James Venables and Lyn Richards shared four wickets but Whitland held on well through Mark Lee and Bobby Webb (16), who was out off the last ball of the match but by then had helped ensure that Whitland wouldn’t lose.

Match 2

Haverfordwest (115 for 3) beat Narberth (113 for 8)

Town take win in reduced overs match

Karl Rhead (Hwest) hits Matthew Johns (Narberth) back over his head for a boundaryUmpires:
Alan Hansen & Arthur Brady

Scorers: Jayne Cole & Peter Hughes

Haverfordwest bounced back from successive defeats in the league and Bowl to record a seven wicket win over Narberth which keeps them in third spot but only four points behind Carew and three behind Cresselly.

This match was reduced to 30 overs per side and after being asked to bat first, Narberth were soon in trouble as skipper Ritchie Adams and Marc Hughes departed for ducks to the pace of Adam James, who also removed Wayne Howells for 12 in a 3 for 12 analysis from eight overs.

Dai Davies - four wickets for HaverfordwestKyle Quartermaine had five fours in his battling 31 alongside Aaron Keane’s 23 (two fours) but both gave catches to Town skipper Huw Scriven. There were double figures for Ian and Ben Hughes as Narberth sought to build a challenging total but Dai Davies returned to bowling with a 4 for 25 haul as Phil Kirkby was the other wicket-taker for Haverfordwest.

In sharp contrast to the early alarms for Narberth when they batted, Haverfordwest’s opening pair of Danny Potter and Richard James built a strong start in a stand of 47 before Potter went for one boundary attempt too many and was well caught by Joel Davies off Kyle Quartermaine’s bowling for 28 (five fours). Karl Rhead joined James to build another solid partnership of 53 runs before James was well caught by Aaron Keane off the occasional bowling of Marc Hughes and although Rhead fell to Ben Hughes for 31 with the winning post in sight it mattered little because Dan Field hit 14 runs from only four deliveries to finish the game for Haverfordwest in style.

Match 3

Lawrenny (229 for 5) drew with Hook (182 for 5)

Hook pair hold on for gritty draw against Lawrenny

Steve Lewis - 66 runs for Lawrenny

Umpires: Trefor Evans & Peter Perry

Scorers: Malcolm Thomas & Joy James

An undefeated partnership of 83 by Brennan Lay and Mick Haltam helped Hook secure a draw at Lawrenny, who took the major portion of the points as they built a daunting total of 229 for 5 which was too much of a challenge for the visitors after they had started well but lost five wickets.

Leading the way for Lawrenny was Steve Lewis, looking back to something like his best form with a classy 66 that contained ten fours and two sixes, after Andrew Cole and Brad Jenkins (29) had given the innings some firm foundations. Lewis shared a partnership of 98 with his captain, Hugh Griffiths, who then went on to 49 not out alongside Ian Jenkins’ undefeated 37 (four fours and two sixes) as they added a late 65 runs which sent the Lawrenny total to daunting proportions despite a three-wicket haul from Ross Martin..

But Hook started well via the in-form pairing of Jamie Phelps (33) and Ben Field (27), who took the score to 53 before they were separated as Steve Lewis (2 for 42) was joined by old war-horse Steve Rees (3 for 10) in doing the damage for Lawrenny.

At 99 for 5 Hook looked a little shaky but Lay had two fours and two sixes in his 46 not out alongside Haltam’s undefeated 35 (five fours) so that Hook claimed the draw and ten points, whilst Lawrenny picked up 19 points and moved into fourth spot in the table as their reward.

Match 4

Carew (166 for 4) beat Neyland (161 for 8)

Carew go top as Sefton shines

Ian Sefton - top scored for Carew

Umpires: Hilliard Davies & Les Hastings

Scorers: Michael Scourfield & John Laugharne

Carew inched ahead of Cresselly in the league championship race as a result of their comfortable home win over Neyland where opening bat Ian Sefton’s classy 93 not out ensured success after they had restricted the visitors to 161 for  8.

Sefton is one of the quickest scorers in the section and Neyland will regret having dropped him when he had scored only five runs because he rapped five fours and four sixes once he got into his considerable stride so that Carew reached their target in only 38.3 overs.

Scott John had been the major run-maker for Neyland after they had been asked to bat first, stroking four fours and two sixes en route to 70 before Sefton came on as the fifth Carew bowler and had him well caught by Ceri Brace in a three-wicket spell as part of a rare cameo for Sefton with the ball. Andrew Miller chipped in with 17 alongside Nick Kooman’s 22 but no-one was able to join John for a long enough period to build a really big score as Rob Scourfield and Tim Hicks were the other Carew wicket-takers.

Carew started their reply in typical fashion as Nick Scourfield joined Sefton in an opening partnership of 92 before Henry Durrant’s left-armers accounted for Scourfield with the aid of a Scott John catch, having struck six boundaries in his 42 runs.

There were minor hiccups for Carew as Wayne Cannon and Simon Wood came and went but Tim Hicks blasted two fours and a six in his speedy 16 and although Durrant and Jay Dunsford shared four wickets for Neyland they were unable to stem the flow of runs from Sefton and paid the inevitable price!
