Match 1 - Cresselly versus Carew

500 runs as big guns draw

Nick Scourfield - undefeated hundred for CarewCarew (241 for 4) drew with Cresselly (260 for 7)

Umpires:
Dave Brandon & Alan Hansen

Scorers:
Mike Scourfield & Dave Richards

Cresselly and Carew showed why they are rightly regarded as two of the ‘Big guns’ of local cricket as they shared 501 runs for only 11 wickets in a batting feast at Carew.

Cresselly were well aware that they scored 230 at Carew and lost previously so they set out to register an even bigger score, despite the early loss of Scott Arthur, to a catch by keeper Christian Phillips off Tim Hicks. Andrew Harris (eight fours in his 41) and Simon Cole (ten fours and two sixes in his), took the score along at a speedy rate before both gave catches to Phillips off Rob Scourfield and Ceri Brace respectively.

Adam Chandler (41) and James Venables also made useful contributions and a late charge by Ryan Lewis (18) and Lyn Richards, who struck two fours and two sixes in a vital 34 not out which propelled Cresselly to a final score of 260 for 7 as Hicks finished with 3 for 53 and there was a wicket apiece for Rhys Davies, Simon Wood, Ceri Brace and Rob Scourfield.

Carew’s Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield showed why they have been regarded as the top opening pair in the county for a number of years as Sefton blasted ten fours and three sixes in a stand of 109 before he was bowled by Ryan Lewis’s slow stuff when he looked in top form. Lewis also took a return catch to shift Brian Hall (15) but Scourfield carried his bat for an excellent 103 which contained eight fours and four sixes, finding useful support from Hicks (31, including two sixes) as Carew were able to ensure a good draw without ever looking likely to snatch the verdict after Sefton’s departure.

Match 2 - Llangwm versus Hook

Ross Martin (Hook) bowls to Llangwm top scorer Joseph Kiff.Ben has a Field

day for Hook

Llangwm (152 all out) lost to Hook (153 for 0)

Umpires:
Dennis Chiffi & Trefor Evans

Scorers:
Joy James & Janice Brick

Ben Field showed his full array of batting strokes for Hook as he helped his team gain a ten-wicket win in their local derby at Pill Parks against Llangwm, which earned Hook maximum bonus points and allowed them to leap-frog over Llangwm at the foot of the table.

Ben Field - superb century for HookLlangwm had approached the match in a positive manner as they elected to bat first and scored a respectable 152 all out but failed to bat the full 45 overs as a down side to their performance in which talented teenager Joseph Kiff led the way with 38 runs.

He was eventually shifted by Matthew Rowlands, who marked his first game of the season with a 3 for 32 haul alongside Jamie Phelps’ 4 for 27 and Brennan Martin’s 2 for 32 which included a cracking catch by keeper William Goronwy to get rid of the ‘danger man’ William Beresford for only 14 runs alongside Luke Brock (20), Jonathan Twigg (16) and Josh Davies (17) as the other Llangwm batsmen who got in but then got themselves out.

Jamie Phelps was joined by Ben Field to open the batting and Phelps dropped into the unusual role of ‘anchor man’ as Field looked in extra good nick and reached his half century before Phelps had managed double figures. Phelps ended up unbeaten on 39, with four fours and a six, whilst Field motored to three figures and finished on 106 not out, including 14 fours and four big sixes, in his superb 106 not out as Hook finished in style, using only 36 of their overs.

Match 3 - Narberth versus Whitland

Ben bolsters Narberth hopes

Ben Quartermaine - 5-wicket haul for NarberthWhitland (162 all out) lost to Narberth (167 all out)

(see match photos . .

Umpires:
Peter Perry & John Austin

Scorers:
Janice Webb & Peter Hughes

Two inspired spells of bowling by Ben Quartermaine helped Narberth to a last-ball victory over neighbours Whitland, whose final batsman Kevin Pearce was bowled by Quartermaine seeking the six needed for victory.

Marc Hughes was again the corner-stone of the Narberth batting as he rapped eight fours and three big sixes in his top score of 71 not out after both Ritchie Adams and Mike Scale managed double figures but got themselves out. Matthew Davies (3 for 34) and Whitland skipper Mark Lee (4 for 47) broke the back of the Narberth innings but they were unable to stop Marc Hughes and brother Ian (24) taking Narberth to a respectable score before Paul Webb wrapped the innings up with an lbw decision and Tom Bevan was run out.

Ben Quartermaine clean bowls Matthew DaviesQuartermaine struck early for Narberth after tea when he removed Paul Davies cheaply and then accounted for Johnny Thomas and Matthew Davies, both for ducks. Dave Lee (44) was joined by Pearce (54) in redressing the balance but Matthew Johns shifted Lee in his 2 for 30 spell, Ian Hughes got rid of Dafydd Evans – and Quartermaine sealed a 30-point win for Narberth as he trapped Pearce lbw from that final delivery!

Match 4 - St Ishames versus Haverfordwest

Andrew Williams drives a ball to the boundary for TishTown fall short against makeshift Tish

Haverfordwest (214 for 7) drew with St Ishmaels (221for 3)

Umpires: Barry Wood & Tony Scourfield

Scorers: Jayne Cole & Wendy Bradshaw

There were runs galore at The Racecourse before Haverfordwest and St Ishmaels had to settle for a draw with Tish having amassed 221 for 3 and The Town failing by eight runs to overtake them.

With a number of players unavailable, Tish called in 59 year old Keith Pawlett and Aussie Brendan Moon, whilst skipper Peter Bradshaw threw down the gauntlet to the league leaders as he opted to bat first and had run-gatherers Stewart Kimpton and Johnny Pawlett as his opening batsmen. The ploy worked because they sped to 38 in only three overs and Kimpton blasted 32 (six fours) in only 23 balls before getting out, whilst Pawlett belted five fours and a six before he was dismissed for 57.

Danny Potter - out on 99 for Haverfordwest! That brought together Andrew Williams and Bradshaw, who followed earlier stands of 47 and 75 with a partnership of 99 before Bradshaw was out lbw from the last ball of the innings for 45, seeking the big six that would have brought a half century.Williams survived a soft chance at midwicket to top score with 65 not out (three fours) and Tish had registered a big score of 221 for 3 as reward for their boldness.

Haverfordwest have a strong batting line-up and although they lost Richard James early they advanced smoothly towards three figures thanks to Danny Potter and Karl Rhead (32) but lost their way a little as Danny Flynn and Jonathan Pawlett shared six wickets. Potter maintained his excellent form as he moved to 99 but was then trapped lbw by Pawlett after a stand of 66 with Adam James – and after losing three quick wickets The Town were forced to take a draw where Tish deservedly enjoyed the lion’s share of the spoils.

Match 5 - Neyland versus Lawrenny

Last-gasp Lawrenny!Last-gasp Lawrenny!

Lawrenny (186 for 9) beat Neyland (182 for 7)

Umpires: Hilliard Davies & Dai Morris

Scorers: Malcolm Thomas & John Laugharne

Lawrenny literally edged their way to a last-ball victory over Neyland when key all-rounder Ian Jenkins edged the last delivery of the match between slip and wicket-keeper to give his side a thrilling win but bring disappointment to a battling Neyland side who again had skipper Andrew Miller in prime form.

Neyland lost Paul Murray early but then Andrew Miller was joined by Scott John (three fours in his 26) in a second wicket stand of 69, followed by 65 alongside his brother Gregg (16) in a solid fourth-wicket partnership.

Ashley Sutton struck the only six of the innings in a late 15 not out as Andrew Miller was unselfishly run out seeking a risky second run and was out with ten boundaries in his century, another fine performance by THE in-form Pembrokeshire cricketer at the moment, leaving Neyland with a healthy final tally of 182 for 7. Rob Williams was the pick of the Lawrenny bowlers with only six runs conceded from 12 miserly overs, nine of them maidens, whilst Richard Prout (2 for 57) and Steve Lewis (2 for 32)  joined Ian Jenkins (1 for 24) as the home wicket-takers.

Andrew Cole (14), Brad Jenkins (25), James Buckle (27), Barry Phillips and especially Steve Lewis (47) kept Lawrenny plugging away and when the fifth wicket fell at 154 it seemed Lawrenny would win with a little to spare.

But then off-spinner Phil Davies caused Lawrenny all sorts of problems in his second spell and only Ian Jenkins was able to resist. He was joined by Phil Cole as No 11 to see Lawrenny to success with his unbeaten 36 – but it was might close indeed!
