Charity Football Match

Haverfordwest County Legends 2 – Valero 6

It was Valero’s younger outfit who came out on top against Haverfordwest County Legends under lights at the Ogi Bridge Meadow Stadium on Wednesday night.

It was a highly entertaining game played in the true spirit of the game and for an excellent cause raising funds for Valero’s charity of the year, ASD Family Help Pembrokeshire.

Steve Parks’ Valero deservedly led 3-0 at the break as  the Haverfordwest Legends found the going hard against younger fitter opposition.

Chris O’Sullivan showed some neat touches in midfield alongside Adam Raymond, Luke Borrelli tried a shot from distance that rattled Charlie Malloy’s crossbar.

However, it was Valero who grabbed an early goal through Dylan Davies, through on goal he neatly tucked past the advancing Legends’ keeper Craig ‘Hovis’ Morris.

Justin ‘Skinny’ Harding was denied by a superb double save by Morris, but minutes later Jake Merry powerfully headed home at a corner for his side’s second.

Will Davis added a third as his dogged perseverance paid off as he drilled a shot in the far corner from 12 yards.

Steve Parks’ Valero outfit were good value for their three goal cushion at the break as Haverfordwest County Legends boss Wayne Jones had his work cut out to get his team back in this clash.

Assistant Legends manager Rob Edwards inspired his Bluebirds old boys for the second half, he told Pembrokeshire Sport he learned his tactics from playing Football Manager.

Well, it definitely did the trick as Nicky Woodrow came on and scored from close range to get the Legends back in  the game.

Sixty something Micky Ellis came on late and played a cameo role, still showing some lovely touches.

Late in the game there was a fluty of goals as veteran Wayne Brunton added a fourth for Valero despite Morris getting a hand to his shot as the ball crept over the line, Luke Borrelli pulled one back before Billy Davis and Justin 'Skinny' Harding added his side's fifth and sixth respectively to wrap up the scoring.

There was not further scoring as Valero held on for a thoroughly deserved win on a night were football was the real winner.
